Hi everyone, I am grateful for this wonderful site. Some great knowledge here. I wanted to share with you my situation and request some advice.
I am UK post-graduate from India and thus eligible for UK's 'Graduate Entrepreneur' visa which allows the graduate 1 year to come to UK, explore their idea and launch the startup. My startup shall serve the creative post-production industries which includes Animation, VFX, etc. I have education, experience in domain expertise in this field. But no business background like MBA. Since coming up with my idea last year it has been a lot of self-teaching and learning.
What I have done so far:
1. Created print screen like mockups of the site, features, user flow etc. Contact around 10 Premier VFX studios for feedback. Response was overwhelming. Received feedbacks from global heads of recruitment at some of the premier studios, 3 programme leaders at leading Animation colleges / Universities, 2 industry veterans who have various VFX book publications to their names, as well as a few VFX supervisors who have supervised on oscar-winning films.
2. In coordination with 2 premier Animation Universities in UK and Canada I circulated the Artist's Survey. 100 responses. 70% said Yes they would use it, 30% said I Don't Know, and 0% said No. 31% respondents were middle-weight artists and 17% were Senior. 83% left us their emails to be notified upon launch.
3. There is a scope for API integration with an application tracking software company used in-house by majority of vfx, games and animation companies. They would be happy to develop a special API with us, and also share their post-production industry customers with us, for a 20% revenue share. Engaging in such a partnership with established company early on may give us nice exposure and also catapult the start up to some extent. I still need to weigh pros and cons. But I'm not sure how soon is too soon to begin sharing 20% revenue at a time when revenue could be re-invested in my business for further growth / marketing.
Although this 1 year visa can be extended by 1 more year by the endorsing University, the ultimate goal is to raise a minimum Funding of £50k from FCA recognised firm and switch to formal Tier 1 entrepreneur visa from within UK. I have $12k available to start this business. I'm non technical founder. Not inventing new technology, startup is a web-based platform.
I do have a clear idea, a business plan, marketing strategy, etc. But I would love to know more ideas, opinions and suggestions. Appreciate your time! Thank you.
