I left SF very recently after spending two years in the city. I lived in Cole Valley, right next to the Haight.
It was a really hectic lifestyle and not because I worked at startups. Public transportation is a challenge in SF and I'd more often than not have to wait for the N Judah to pass me 2-3 times at the stop before there was any room to get on in the morning. There are so many mentally ill folks who are aggressive with passersby on Market and in SoMa that I struggled to not feel on edge all of the time. And, I really, really disliked encountering the "sanitation issues" on every street and at metro stations. As of a month and a half ago, I now live in Louisville, KY and my husband and I both work remotely from a much larger house than we could have ever afforded in the Bay and I feel much more at peace.
